Nizam's is not just Kathi Rolls.
Looking in the history of this popular foodies' favourite place, one finds that Nizam's Kathi Roll originated in Kolkata's Nizam Restaurant, founded in 1932 by Raza Hassan Saheb near New Market. Kolkata. The kathi roll emerged around 1932 when staff wrapped greasy mutton kebabs in paratha for hurried British customers seeking portable snacks. Nizam later switched from heavy iron skewers to lighter bamboo ones called "kathi" in Bengali(and Hindi /Urdu) by 1964, giving the dish its name. This innovation made kebabs mess-free and popular beyond the restaurant.
Connaught Place Branch of Nizam's in Delhi's Connaught Place established between 1978 - 1983, carrying forward the Kolkata legacy of Mughlai kebabs and rolls. This outlet preserves the original recipes, focusing on chicken and mutton kathi rolls alongside kebabs. It draws crowds for its authentic taste tied to the 1932 invention.
I have been visiting the place for the past 4 decades and our children like thousands others for very fond of the place. They don't live in the city any more but whenever they visit the city Nizam's CP is a "must do" in their list before they return. The taste of the food is quite authentic, although I have never been to their Kolkata outlet and it is distinctly different from any other place (some may have tried to copy that but no one comes as close). The preparation is usually very oily and may not go well with the stomachs of seniors but the unique taste is so tempting that you can't step away for long although you may want to not indulge. This, however, in my opinion is much safer and nutritious in comparison to the Western fast food available in the country.
Their Kebabs, paranthas, daal, roomali roti and other dishes are tasty and if you have any appetite left after eating rolls ,you should try that as well.
Bon appetite.
